General Statement of Duties:

The Nursing Administrator provides leadership, consultation, and support for the patient service areas during designated shifts. This position provides administrative continuity to staff, patients, families and visitors while acting as a liaison for the administrator on-call and the Nursing Management team.

Essential Job Functions:


1. Accurately assesses the needs of the Nursing Department and the patients served and facilitates obtaining ancillary services response and/or needed resources in situations affecting the optimal delivery of patient care.


2. Participates in and supports the development and actualization of the Department of Nursing's goals. Assists in communicating the philosophy and expectation of the Department of Nursing.


3. Serves as a communication liaison between the administrator on-call and nursing management, staff, patients, families, and visitors.


4. Provides on-site leadership, direction, and support for the operational management of patient service areas during designated shifts.


5. Monitors workload on patient care units and communicates observations to the appropriate shift charge/coordinator, and manager.


6. Intervenes and takes appropriate action in situations related to violation of hospital policy or employee injury.

General Statement of Duties:

The Director, Nursing is responsible to the Senior Director, Vice President and/or the Chief Nursing Officer for facilitating, coordinating and delegating the delivery of patient care to a defined group of patients during their entire hospitalization period. The Director, Nursing provides leadership and overall responsibility for the functioning of assigned clinical patient care/procedural unit(s). She/he is responsible 24 hours a day, with full accountability, for the staffing and management of patient care in each of his/her units, for promoting the practice of professional nursing in a specified patient care area, and for the acquisition, development, and utilization of resources (human and material) needed to fulfill those responsibilities. She/he acts as a liaison between physicians and the patient care team and works cooperatively with administrators, physicians, staff, other managers and all customers of the Methodist Healthcare System to provide services, which consistently meet and exceed the expectations of their customers. This is accomplished by assessing and prioritizing opportunities to improve, plan and implement effective changes and evaluate outcomes of process improvement activities. The Director, Nursing models behavior consistent with the MHS management philosophy.

Essential Job Functions:


1. Builds and maintains a high functioning team.


2. Manages and provides guidance and direction to first line supervisors/charge personnel including interviewing, work allocation, orientation and training, staff development, problem resolution, evaluating performance, making recommendations for personnel actions, and motivation of employees to achieve peak performance. Is responsible for meeting unit productivity targets.


3. Manages and plans for unit and clinical activities including supervising the treatment and care of the patients.


4. Responsible for organizing, directing, teaching and evaluating total nursing care within area of responsibility, including ensuring adequate staffing.


5. Participates in the planning, development and management of operational and equipment budgets annually. Provides financial variance analysis reports in a timely manner. Reviews monthly financial statistics and plans expenditures according to budget limitations. Manages the ongoing implementation of approved plans.


6. Anticipates the purchase or replacement of equipment with input from staff and physicians. Implements the equipment purchase process. Anticipates and recommends needs for added space and needed services not provided by the organization.

7. Evaluates the collaborative care system on unit(s) utilizing variance reports, clinical data, and cost/quality outcomes.


9. Communicates with staff and keeps staff current with appropriate information through staff meetings, newsletters and announcements. This includes educational needs identified for the unit, information from Process improvement activities, new technology/therapy/service, plant technology, safety program, findings from Infection Control, unit goals, objectives, and standards, and unit problems and their resolutions.


10. Promotes the practice of professional nursing by mentoring unit nurses in the development of leadership skills, facilitating shared governance, and encouraging participation in the STEPP Program. Encourages collaborative relationships between physicians and nurses within the specific area.


11. Modifies the interview techniques to adequately assess the patient by identifying the physical, psychosocial, and educational needs common to infants/children, adolescents, adults or geriatric patients.


12. Assists with vendor selection for new equipment based on departmental needs.


13. Completes other duties as assigned.


Minimum Education, Experience, Training, Required Knowledge, Skill, Abilities and Other Job-Related Characteristics:


1. Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Note: Current MHS employees who completed a Nursing Diploma or Associates in Nursing degree program who are currently in a Nurse Director position have until 1/1/2014 to meet BSN education requirements.


2. Experience: Three years recent RN acute care experience


3. Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility and department/unit which are specific to the needs of the patient population served (if applicable).


4. Preferred: Master’s Degree in Nursing or related field; 1-year management experience as a charge RN, clinical care manager/supervisor, or manager.

Minimum License, Certificates, or Registrations Required:

Must have current RN license to practice professional nursing in the state of Texas. Must have Texas RN license within 90 days of hire.
